World Book Night 2014 – #WBN2014

World Book Night - Book Giver

Today Create With Joy is participating in a very special event. We’re thrilled to be first-year givers at World Book Night – an annual event where tens of thousands of volunteers in the United States share their love of reading throughout their local communities, person to person, by handing out a total of a half million books – for FREE.

World Book Night originated in the UK and Ireland in 2011 and was launched in the United States in 2012. Each year, World Book Night is celebrated on April 23 because it’s the UNESCO International Day Of The Book. This date also celebrates the birth of William Shakespeare and the passing of Miguel de Cervantes.

There are several factors that make World Book Night so special:

  • This event targets teens and adults who are light readers or non-readers.
  • Quality contemporary books and classics are included on each year’s list.
  • Everyone involved with the project donates their time, creativity and services!

Each giver who applies and is accepted has the opportunity to choose the book he or she would like to share with their community.

I chose Hotel On The Corner Of Bitter And Sweet by Jamie Ford for my book. Kudos to Jamie and his publisher for donating 50,000 copies of that book to the mix – and to Jamie for waiving all royalties so that others can enjoy this poignant story!

I will share more about my first World Book Night experience in an upcoming post. In the meantime, I invite you to visit the World Book Night website for more information – and to sign up for their newsletter if you’d like to be a part of future World Book Night events!

It was my first year giving books away and I gave away Pontoon by Garrison Keillor. My experience was a little bit disappointing but I am going to give the rest away today at nursing homes so hopefully they will find a home!!! Hope you had a great experience.

      Hi Beth Ann –

Saw your video on You Tube – it was fabulous!
Sorry your experience was not all you hoped it could be. I’m hosting a book giveaway on Giving right now and I was thinking that some of the tips in there would be perfect for preparing for an event like this!

Will stop by your blog in a bit to read your posts!

What a fantastic idea! I wonder if I could get my husband to donate.

That’s so great you were a giver this year. I look forward to hearing about it. I haven’t read Hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet but it is on my TBR. I have only read one book which was Where’d You Go, Bernadette? I just finished it last week.
